Lawyers and CIOs are grappling with this issue when a company’s decision-maker isn’t an actual person WITH the rise of artificial intelligence, one question that is often asked is who is accountable when an AI agent makes a decision? Nobody, it turns out, if you ask the senior management at Air Canada. In 2022, a traveller named Jake Moffatt asked the airline’s chatbot how a bereavement fare discount worked. The chatbot replied to say he could book the fare first at full price and claim the discount within 90 days. That response, however, turned out to be wrong. When Air Canada refused to honour it, Moffatt took them to a small claims tribunal in British Columbia. The airline argued – and I am not making this up – that the chatbot was “a separate legal entity” responsible for its own words

By Eduardo Baptista BEIJING, July 27 (Reuters) - China's commerce ministry on Monday accused the United States of "AI hegemonism" and threatened countermeasures after senior U.S. officials said Chinese AI companies could face investigations, sanctions and trade restrictions over the alleged theft of U.S. technology. The ministry said Washington was threatening Chinese companies with punishment based on allegations they used "distillation" to copy advanced U.S. AI models, despite what it called a lack of factual or legal grounds. Model distillation is a widely used AI training technique in which developers use the outputs of a more capable model to train or improve another system. U.S. officials say they distinguish between legitimate distillation and large-scale extraction that amounts

Of late, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has quickly emerged as one of the biggest conversations at work. For some workers, it has been a helpful assistant — checking grammar, summarising information, keeping track of deadlines or helping them get started on unfamiliar topics. For others however, the concern with AI goes beyond having to learn a new tool. Rather, it is the fear that parts of their role could be automated, that their experience might be less valued or that they may even find themselves eventually displaced by AI one day. ## Anxiety of job loss has been acknowledged by PM Wong Such fears have been acknowledged by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. For centuries, fighting wars meant deploying hardware such as tanks, aircraft, artillery and weapons, built by a handful of prime contractors under long-term government programmes. It also meant putting boots on the ground. That paradigm is not disappearing, but software is becoming increasingly central to it. And now, more soldiers are fighting wars through a screen. The military AI industry now encompasses everything from cloud computing to autonomous drones and decision-making software. This shift traces back to the US drone programme of the 2000s and 2010s, which turned remote, screen-based killing into a feature of how wars would be fought. Billions of dollars are flowing into a handful of companies now leading the AI transformation of militaries, as the old military-industrial comple

AI has learned how to write, draw, code, and talk like humans. Humanoid robots that dance on stage and run marathons have also become familiar showcases, particularly in China. But turning those demonstrations into AI systems that can reliably perform real-world tasks at scale, and at a cost businesses or individuals can afford, is still a major challenge. Industry players call this physical AI: AI systems that can perceive their surroundings and interact with the physical world through machines such as robots and drones. While the race among AI models dominates the daily conversation, investors around the world are scrambling to ensure they don’t miss the ChatGPT moment for physical AI. Globally, robotics and physical AI startups raised [US$16.3 billion](https://pitchbook.com/news/reports

The company sought investor feedback this week after Chinese regulators increased scrutiny of offshore structures that let foreign investors gain exposure to sectors with limits on overseas ownership. Moonshot had earlier tried to win an exemption to keep the VIE model, but its latest proposal suggests a waiver is unlikely, in a sign of tighter oversight by the China Securities Regulatory Commission. _🔗 Source: [South China Morning Post](https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3354078/chinas-moonshot-ai-moves-unwind-offsho

The EU is debating how far platforms should go in scanning private digital messages and conversations. Earlier this month, MEPs approved extending the "Chat Control 1.0" regulation until April 2028. The measure, in force since 2021, allows platforms to voluntarily scan digital private messages and emails. This doesn't apply to end-to-end encrypted services, including WhatsApp and Signal, where only senders and receivers can read messages. Chat control is an exception to Europe's e-Privacy Directive, which protects private online activity and communication. It requires users' consent before any access, monitoring, or use. The goal is to protect children from the increasing number of online sexual abuse material and to use stronger tools to identify content that would otherwise remain unnoti

METR's new metric, the "expenditure horizon," puts a dollar figure on how cost-effective AI agents are at solving problems. Imagine a healthcare system made up of multiple AI agents: one that manages symptom assessment, another scheduling, a third insurance, and a fourth pharmacy. Each is an expert in its domain. But they all have their own distinct knowledge and objectives. Today they can exchange data, but they are not yet able to actually coordinate patient care without a human making the decisions. “The intelligence is already there. What is missing is the connective tissue that turns four strangers into one team,” explains Vijoy Pandey, senior vice president and general manager of Outshift by Cisco. This “connective tissue” comes from adding a semantic layer—what Outshift calls the “Internet of Cognition”—that enables agents across domains to work together and, critically, “think” together through shared i

For the enterprise, the promise of agentic AI is much more than just a better chatbot. It is software agents that execute business tasks end-to-end across people, business workflows, data, and systems. The platform best-suited to run agents is built with proper CPU capacity, resilient data access, policy-aware tool use, observability, memory management, and the ability to predictably plan and scale agents. To better understand some of these dependencies, Intel performed thousands of agentic AI workload experiments. Our initial findings create and support five practical lessons for enterprise leaders: 1. Agentic AI is a larger systems problem, not just one of inference. 2. The majority of existing agentic AI harnesses are limited and do not measure overall system performance. 3. Plan capaci

Multiple robotics companies are tackling one of AI’s hardest problems: building foundation models capable of executing tasks they were never explicitly trained to handle. Their approaches run the gamut — from studying millions of web videos and conducting computer simulations to collecting motion data from humans performing tasks in gloves with built-in sensors. [Enigma](https://www.enigma.inc/), a research lab set to emerge from stealth on Monday, is taking a fundamentally different approach. Rather than focusing purely on model capabilities, the less-than-one-year-old startup wants to study how humans engage with robots in hopes that these interactions will lead to intuitive interfaces and possibly a different kind of robotic brain. To finance its mission, Enigma raised a $70 million see

In this case, the issue is students using AI to cheat on assignments. The solution, used to great effect by one professor, was to hide a white-colored font in the assignment prompt telling the AI to talk nonsense about an unrelated subject. In an online discussion post, Alcorn State University history professor Dr. Jason Gibson posed a question that represented part of his students' midterm. It was about the Industrial Revolution, but knowing how many students now rely solely on artificial intelligence for their answers, he secretly embedded instructions telling the AI to in

Man behind the meme Meme generator may have screwed up by using templates in outputs, expert says. Artist Elmer Saflor, who goes by the online handle “Superelmer,” loves that millions of people have shared his “Running Away Balloon” comic since it became a popular meme in 2017. However, just because lots of people have copied it, that doesn’t mean it’s OK for an AI meme generator to commercialize his copyrighted meme as a template for who knows how many ads, he told Ars. That’s why he’s fighting to stop one of the biggest meme generators currently leveraging AI to rapidly scale the allegedly illegal use. ## TL;DR I sketched a better dog harness seven years ago, 3D-printed one part of it, and then stalled out. Not on the engineering, but on the patent paperwork. This month I handed the whole thing to AI and filed a provisional patent for about $65. This series is the honest record of what comes next: how far AI, and specifically an autonomous agent, can carry an idea from a drawer toward an actual product and a company. Seven years ago, I was sitting at a bar after work, having a quick beer to relax before heading home for my second shift with my newborn son. Or maybe at that point he wasn't so newborn, but he was still a baby. An older lady sat next to me with a dog. The dog was very docile, probably an older dog, just lying on the floor, waiting for its master to finish her drink. When th

AI changes the work that people do. That alone is fairly common for collecting robot training data, but this headset includes sensors that measure his brain waves as he carefully disassembles the block tower. Encord is one of a small but growing number of startups betting that the next real constraint on humanoid and warehouse robotics won’t be model architecture but instead the sheer scarcity of real-world physical training data
