The artificial intelligence coding revolution comes with a catch: it's expensive. Claude Code , Anthropic's terminal-based AI agent that can write, debug, and deploy code autonomously, has captured the imagination of software developers worldwide. But its pricing — ranging from $20 to $200 per month depending on usage — has sparked a growing rebellion among the very programmers it aims to serve. Now, a free alternative is gaining traction. Goose , an open-source AI agent developed by Block (the financial technology company formerly known as Square), offers nearly identical functionality to Claude Code but runs entirely on a user's local machine. No subscription fees. No cloud dependency. No rate limits that reset every five hours. "Your data stays with you, period," said Parth Sareen, a so

Salesforce on Tuesday launched an entirely rebuilt version of Slackbot , the company's workplace assistant, transforming it from a simple notification tool into what executives describe as a fully powered AI agent capable of searching enterprise data, drafting documents, and taking action on behalf of employees. The new Slackbot, now generally available to Business+ and Enterprise+ customers, is Salesforce's most aggressive move yet to position Slack at the center of the emerging "agentic AI" movement — where software agents work alongside humans to complete complex tasks. The launch comes as Salesforce attempts to convince investors that artificial intelligence will bolster its products rather than render them obsolete. The viability of orbital data centers hosting the largest and most capable large language models (LLMs) remains hotly contested. But enormous deployments that require thousands of GPUs aren’t the only way LLMs might prove useful in space. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory recently sent Google’s Gemma 3 to space, achieving the first in-orbit demonstration of a vision-language model analyzing imagery from a satellite’s own sensor. The system, known as NAVI-Orbital, used Gemma 3 to analyze images captured by a YAM-9 satellite built by Loft Orbital . Juan M. Delfa , technical group lead at NASA, said that though the goal in this case was image analysis, the project’s success implies a fundamentally new way researchers on the ground can interact with spacecraft. “This is a major shift,” said Del

The large language models (LLMs) that form the basis of generative AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can generate uncannily human-like text and images. But these models still struggle with a skill that, ironically, looks at face value to be right in their wheelhouse: analyzing structured data. A new type of generative AI is set to change this situation. Although you can get your favorite chatbot to solve intractable math problems , review dense legal documents, compose a catchy pop song , or put together some slick PowerPoint slides, give it anything more than a small table and it doesn’t have a clue what to do. For most companies and organizations, the most important data sits in spreadsheets. Whether it’s a bank’s transaction logs, a marketing agency’s website metrics, clin

⚡ There are many words that I would never, ever use to describe a drone.
There are many words that I would never, ever use to describe a drone. Stealthy. Subtle. Whatever the opposite of obnoxious is. Much of this is because of the giant angry bee sound that drones tend to make, but it’s also the way that they look in flight: With uncannily linear movements and an even less canny ability to hover perfectly still, they tend to draw the eye as affronts to nature. In a paper presented this week at Robotics Science and Systems 2026 in Sydney, roboticists from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., demonstrated a drone called Phantom Twist that is essentially invisible to humans, being an order of magnitude more difficult to see in flight than a typical quadrotor. They accomplished this with the aid of computational design, and while the resulting hardware is, I w

The experience builds on feedback from early testers and gives you control over what you connect and when ChatGPT can use it. Every week, more than 300 million people turn to ChatGPT with health-related questions—from understanding a lab result and preparing for an appointment to making sense of what a doctor said and building a healthier routine. When people hear the word cyberattack, they usually imagine someone guessing a password, planting malware, stealing a computer, hacking an organization's network or exploiting a flaw in software. A side-channel attack works differently. It looks for clues a computer gives away while doing ordinary work. A simple analogy is a locked safe. A thief may not know the combination and may not be able to break the lock. But if the thief can listen closely as the dial turns, small clicks or churns or pauses might reveal something about what is happening inside. The safe is not meant to share that information, but its physical behavior still leaks clues. Modern computers have their own versions of such clues. For example, each computer might take different amounts of time to complete different tasks

It started as a routine test. Researchers at OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, were putting a new, unreleased system through its paces with a series of challenges [earlier this month](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2026/07/22/openai-admits-rogue-bot-escaped-the-lab-and-hacked-rival/). These exams are a typical part of AI testing, marking a system's proficiency in areas such as coding, computer security and maths. Crucially, the system is blocked from the internet while it is tested. A few days into the test, on the other side of the US, staff at the tech company Hugging Face noticed something unusual. Someone – or something – had hacked into their servers, gaining access to private data. It took a week for the culprit to be revealed. OpenAI said last Tuesday that its unreleased AI

Personal details of almost 3,000 voters have been leaked by a council in Warwickshire. Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council admitted the data breach and said an administrative error was to blame. The authority said the issue occurred as council staff were updating the electoral roll, sending out emails to those who had registered with the council's online elections portal. However, the email sent to voters accidentally contained a link to thousands of names, those individuals' corresponding email addresses and, alongside the information, a personalised security code allowing each recipient to log in to the council's online system. Microsoft AI is betting on small specialist models instead of expensive general-purpose ones, according to AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman. MAI-Cyber-1-Flash tops the CyberGym benchmark when embedded in an orchestrator and reportedly costs half as much as Anthropic's Mythos, but it still relies on OpenAI for hard tasks. Competition is shifting from individual models to the orchestration software that routes and manages them. Are AI Models Working Harder Than They Need to?

Much of modern AI runs on multiplication. Neural networks behind everything from generated answers to photo organization and song recommendations perform millions or billions of operations that multiply inputs by learned weights. Lizy K. John thinks that’s more work than the job requires. John, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, has spent the past five years working on a class of models called weightless neural networks . Instead of repeatedly multiplying inputs by weights, these networks pass binary inputs through interconnected lookup tables—closer to consulting a collection of stored answers than solving the same arithmetic problem repeatedly. Depending on the task, she says, the networks can be 1,000 times as small or as fast as con

Detect Dark Matter’s Mark From Your Backyard

If you’re wondering what dark matter is, you’re not alone. Astronomers don’t know. But they’ve determined that this invisible material must be far more abundant than the stars and nebulas that they can see. They’ve surmised as much from observing the gravitational effects of all this perplexing dark stuff, launching a decades-long campaign to understand its nature. I recently learned that it is possible to sense the presence of dark matter using a small radio telescope such as the Discovery Dish covered in these pages last year. The trick is to know what observations to collect and how to analyze them. I’ll sketch that out below, but first let me describe the homemade radio telescope I put together for this project. It’s a pyramidal-horn antenna, not unlike the horn antenna first used in 1

In February 2024, a young man lay somewhere on the frozen shore of James Bay, Canada, surrounded by snow and darkness, succumbing to hypothermia. When he failed to get home on time, his frantic mother sent a Facebook message to Elizabeth Kataquapit, then chief of the indigenous community Fort Albany First Nation in northeastern Ontario. Kataquapit used Facebook to alert the community’s search-and-rescue squad , who jumped onto their snowmobiles and drove into the night. Before dawn, they returned with the dazed man, who told rescuers he’d given up until wolves nudged his hypothermic body. “The wolves told him to wake up,” Kataquapit says. “I really believe they saved his life.” A fiber-optic network also played a key role. Singapore organisations are among the most willing in the world to hand cybersecurity decisions to AI, but that trust has yet to translate into fewer or shorter cyber incidents, according to new research from [Arctic Wolf](https://www.arcticwolf.com/). The cybersecurity and AI company’s 2026 AI & Cybersecurity Trends Report, based on a survey of 1,350 IT and security decision-makers worldwide including in Singapore, found 60 per cent of Singapore organisations trust AI to independently triage alerts and 56 per cent trust it to patch vulnerabilities without human oversight – both well above the 42 per cent global average. Yet 61 per cent still experienced a major cyber incident in the past year, with 13 per cent reporting severe disruption lasting six to nine months, more than three times t

Drought has been declared across large parts of England and the whole of Wales as successive heatwaves have left water supplies under strain. The Environment Agency (EA) has announced that more than half of England is now in drought, with central, eastern and southern areas most affected. A drought now also covers all of Wales, after Natural Resources Wales (NRW) extended the measure initially brought in for North Wales and the Upper Severn river basin. Both England and Wales are on course to record the driest July on record, which - on top of hot, dry conditions in spring and early summer and increased demand - has left water supplies heavily depleted. More than 20 million people in England and Wales have now been placed under a hosepipe ban. This means hosepipes cannot be used for wateri
