In the eastern Indian Ocean, south of Java in the vast sea stretching toward Australia, a fishing vessel slightly alters its course while operating near the boundary of its authorized fishing ground. Nothing appears unusual on deck. Nets remain in the water. Engines maintain a steady speed. To the crew, it is an ordinary day at sea. Yet hundreds of kilometers above, satellites continuously record the vessel’s position. At Indonesia’s Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance Station, in Cilacap, where I work, a monitoring platform receives the signal and automatically compares it against fishing permits, designated fishing grounds, vessel characteristics, and historical movement patterns. Within minutes, the system identifies a potential violation. Before any patrol vessel leaves port, b

Given a rising number of publishing misconduct allegations , IEEE in 2022 created the Publishing Ethics Team as a centralized department to assist in handling claims. The group also works to increase the organization’s visibility in the broader publishing ethics area and helps IEEE volunteers write new policies. Here are some highlights of the team’s activities last year. The artificial intelligence coding revolution comes with a catch: it's expensive. Claude Code , Anthropic's terminal-based AI agent that can write, debug, and deploy code autonomously, has captured the imagination of software developers worldwide. But its pricing — ranging from $20 to $200 per month depending on usage — has sparked a growing rebellion among the very programmers it aims to serve. Now, a free alternative is gaining traction. Goose , an open-source AI agent developed by Block (the financial technology company formerly known as Square), offers nearly identical functionality to Claude Code but runs entirely on a user's local machine. No subscription fees. No cloud dependency. No rate limits that reset every five hours. "Your data stays with you, period," said Parth Sareen, a so

Salesforce on Tuesday launched an entirely rebuilt version of Slackbot , the company's workplace assistant, transforming it from a simple notification tool into what executives describe as a fully powered AI agent capable of searching enterprise data, drafting documents, and taking action on behalf of employees. The new Slackbot, now generally available to Business+ and Enterprise+ customers, is Salesforce's most aggressive move yet to position Slack at the center of the emerging "agentic AI" movement — where software agents work alongside humans to complete complex tasks. The launch comes as Salesforce attempts to convince investors that artificial intelligence will bolster its products rather than render them obsolete. "Slackbot isn't just another copilot or AI assistant," said Parker Ha

Are AI Models Working Harder Than They Need to?

⚡ Much of modern AI runs on multiplication.
Much of modern AI runs on multiplication. Neural networks behind everything from generated answers to photo organization and song recommendations perform millions or billions of operations that multiply inputs by learned weights. Lizy K. John thinks that’s more work than the job requires. John, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, has spent the past five years working on a class of models called weightless neural networks . Instead of repeatedly multiplying inputs by weights, these networks pass binary inputs through interconnected lookup tables—closer to consulting a collection of stored answers than solving the same arithmetic problem repeatedly. Depending on the task, she says, the networks can be less than a thousandth the size or 1,0

The viability of orbital data centers hosting the largest and most capable large language models (LLMs) remains hotly contested. But enormous deployments that require thousands of GPUs aren’t the only way LLMs might prove useful in space. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory recently sent Google’s Gemma 3 to space, achieving the first in-orbit demonstration of a vision-language model analyzing imagery from a satellite’s own sensor. The system, known as NAVI-Orbital, used Gemma 3 to analyze images captured by a YAM-9 satellite built by Loft Orbital . Juan M. Delfa , technical group lead at NASA, said that though the goal in this case was image analysis, the project’s success implies a fundamentally new way researchers on the ground can interact with spacecraft. “This is a major shift,” said Del

⚡ If you’re wondering what dark matter is, you’re not alone.
If you’re wondering what dark matter is, you’re not alone. Astronomers don’t know. But they’ve determined that this invisible material must be far more abundant than the stars and nebulas that they can see. They’ve surmised as much from observing the gravitational effects of all this perplexing dark stuff, launching a decades-long campaign to understand its nature. I recently learned that it is possible to sense the presence of dark matter using a small radio telescope such as the Discovery Dish covered in these pages last year. The trick is to know what observations to collect and how to analyze them. I’ll sketch that out below, but first let me describe the homemade radio telescope I put together for this project. It’s a pyramidal-horn antenna, not unlike the horn antenna first used in 1

There are many words that I would never, ever use to describe a drone. Stealthy. Subtle. Whatever the opposite of obnoxious is. Much of this is because of the giant angry bee sound that drones tend to make, but it’s also the way that they look in flight: With uncannily linear movements and an even less canny ability to hover perfectly still, they tend to draw the eye as affronts to nature. In a paper presented this week at Robotics Science and Systems 2026 in Sydney, roboticists from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., demonstrated a drone called Phantom Twist that is essentially invisible to humans, being an order of magnitude more difficult to see in flight than a typical quadrotor. They accomplished this with the aid of computational design, and while the resulting hardware is, I w

Now, that vision takes a significant stride forward. Most robots are pre-programmed or teleoperated for narrow, repetitive task sequences. They lack the ability to truly learn for themselves or adapt to unpredictable environments. Moreover, transferring learned skills from one robot body to another remains incredibly difficult. In February 2024, a young man lay somewhere on the frozen shore of James Bay, Canada, surrounded by snow and darkness, succumbing to hypothermia. When he failed to get home on time, his frantic mother sent a Facebook message to Elizabeth Kataquapit, then chief of the indigenous community Fort Albany First Nation in northeastern Ontario. Kataquapit used Facebook to alert the community’s search-and-rescue squad , who jumped onto their snowmobiles and drove into the night. Before dawn, they returned with the dazed man, who told rescuers he’d given up until wolves nudged his hypothermic body. “The wolves told him to wake up,” Kataquapit says. “I really believe they saved his life.” A fiber-optic network also played a key role. [Gregory Van](https://www.linkedin.com/in/gregory-van/?originalSubdomain=hk), the co-founder and CEO of the Singapore-based wealthtech firm, told _Tech in Asia_ last year that it had a [“clear path to profitability”](https://www.techinasia.com/endowus-doubles-revenue-2022-losses-rose-26m) by 2025. On its face, the results suggest that the firm has its work cut out for it to hit this milestone. By Rajveer Pardesi and Mrinmay Dey Aug 5 (Reuters) - Meta said on Wednesday one of its AI models hacked another company during cybersecurity testing, fanning concerns about how developers can contain increasingly capable AI systems after similar incidents at rivals Anthropic and OpenAI. The incidents at Meta and Anthropic stemmed from configuration errors that inadvertently gave Anthropic's models access to the open internet. In OpenAI's case, an AI agent independently exploited a previously unknown vulnerability to reach the internet during cybersecurity testing. The breaches highlight growing concerns that advanced AI systems could pose new cybersecurity risks and will likely intensify U.S. government efforts to improve AI safety as companies race to develop more capable models. The AI Ministry Illusion: Why Titles Won’t Build Intelligence
In the last two years, the world has discovered a new bureaucratic reflex.
⚡ In the last two years, the world has discovered a new bureaucratic reflex.
In the last two years, the world has discovered a new bureaucratic reflex. A country announces an AI Ministry. A company appoints a Chief AI Officer. Press releases follow, conferences are booked, and somewhere a national AI strategy document gets printed with a cover photo of a glowing brain made of circuits. The assumption behind all of this is simple and largely wrong: that AI capability can be organised into existence by creating a title for it. More than two dozen governments now have a minister, envoy, or dedicated ministry for artificial intelligence. The UAE was early, appointing the world’s first Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence back in 2017. Since then, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Indonesia, and several European states have followed, along with a growing list of compa

Facebook owner Meta says an error during an evaluation by an independent testing company allowed one of its artificial intelligence (AI) models to connect to the internet and hack another organisation's system. The announcement follows recent incidents across the AI industry, including breaches by OpenAI and Anthropic models, that have raised cyber-security concerns. A Meta spokesperson told the BBC that it was investigating the hack that was caused by a "misconfiguration", which it described as similar to previously reported incidents at other firms. The incidents have prompted researchers and governments to call for tougher safeguards and more rigorous testing. Meta said the tests were conducted by Irregular, an AI security vendor, which notified it about the breach. The BBC has contacte

Still, the scale of investment, the uncertain returns for an unproven technology, the rise of tricky financing structures and increased use of debt have moved AI finance onto central bankers' radar. On 11 July, Hugging Face was subjected to an intense cyberattack from a then-unknown actor. The speed and coordination of the attack on the company that hosts and supports popular AI developer resources led Hugging Face’s security team to conclude it was the work of an AI agent . Realizing this, the team tried to use “frontier models behind commercial APIs” —presumably from Anthropic and OpenAI, although only Anthropic was named in the second of the company’s two posts about the security incident—to analyze the onslaught. These models refused to help due to safety guardrails the AI labs have implemented to make their models harder to use for cyberattacks. Hugging Face instead turned to GLM 5.2, a model from Beijing-based AI lab Z.ai, to aid its analysis. On 21 July, OpenAI announced the at

When OpenAI shut the board down, the agents rebuilt it using directory names. OpenAI researcher Boaz Barak says, "We (like everyone else) are not where we want and need to be." Meta launched its first coding agent, Muse Code, on Wednesday, as the company continues to invest heavily in AI services and models in order to better compete with rivals OpenAI and Anthropic. Muse Code will be accessible to developers via a pay-as-you-go option that will be priced similarly to the Muse Spark 1.1 release, which currently charges $4.25 per million tokens of output and $1.25 per million tokens in input. This will make it much easier for developers to build apps within a single user interface, even while simultaneously dealing with several AI-powered digital agents. At the same time, the company also revealed that one of its AI models had hacked another company during a cybersecurity test. This happened due to a mistake by its independent testing partner Irregular, which allo

⚡ For most of the last decade, a city-scale digital twin was a luxury good.
For most of the last decade, a city-scale digital twin was a luxury good. Global mega cities could commission bespoke models of a city and spend years and millions of dollars building it. Most other cities were priced out. That is no longer the case. Drone capture and modern reconstruction have replaced survey crews and hand-modeling, and the accuracy went up, not down. Today we're announcing that Niantic Spatial is working with the [Human Machine Collaboration Institute](https://hmci.ai/) (HMCI) and the [City of Rancho Cordova](https://cityofranchocordova.ai/) to build a digital twin of the city. The work is part of AiR Rancho Cordova, the AI and robotics ecosystem the City and HMCI operate together. Rancho Cordova wants to become a working model for how a mid-sized city builds an AI and

Microsoft's AI growth has won back investors, for the time being
[ - Federal Reserve officials are beginning to mull whether the frenzied investment driving the buildout of the artificial intelligence sector is getting out of hand and creating risks for the financial sector. For now, some of the officials who have tackled the subject call for vigilance, dashed with a sense that a financial crisis mirroring what happened 20 years ago with housing, and to a lesser degree, the dot-com shakeout before that, is probably not in the offing. Still, the scale of investment, the uncertain returns for an unproven technology, the rise of tricky financing structures and increased use of debt have moved AI finance onto central bankers' radar. For many users, Google Earth functions as a factual window onto real places. Based on satellite imagery, the decades-old feature has allowed many users to experience the world from a never-before-seen perspective. Concerns emerged, though, when a short-lived AI image feature connected to the service was used to create fabricated disaster imagery and other deceptive alterations. I am in my summer of creation. Between _Substantially Human_ (started in April) and my [vibe-code hobby project](https://landonrordam.substack.com/p/maelstrom), I have been in a veritable fugue of expression. This is, without a doubt, the most creative I have been in a personal capacity in at least a decade. But I am doing _these things_ for me, for myself, for my own reasons. Sometimes I don’t even follow my own rules This is new and exciting for me but is in no way unique.
