For a quarter century, the Google search box has been one of the most recognizable interfaces in computing: a thin white rectangle, a blinking cursor, a few typed words, and a list of blue links. On Tuesday, Google will formally retire that paradigm. At its annual I/O developer conference , Google announced a sweeping redesign of the search box itself — the literal text field where billions of queries begin every day — transforming it from a simple keyword input into a dynamic, AI-driven conversation starter that can accept text, images, PDFs, videos, and even open Chrome tabs as inputs. The company is also merging its AI Overviews and AI Mode features into a single, seamless search flow, eliminating the friction that previously forced users to choose between a traditional results page and

Most hospitals and health care providers use electronic health records instead of paper charts to note patient vaccinations, diagnoses, and procedures. AthenaOne , Epic , and Oracle Health are some of the systems employed around the world. Many patients can access their electronic medical records from home. The platforms exist thanks to pioneering efforts such as the Medical Information System (MIS-I). The first hospital-wide computer system, it was developed in the 1960s by Lockheed Martin (then known as Lockheed Missiles and Space Co.) in partnership with El Camino Hospital , in Mountain View, Calif. Doctors and nurses used MIS-I (pronounced miss-ONE ) to admit patients, order lab work and imaging, schedule follow-up appointments, and issue hospital bills, according to a 1973 article pub

It was a surprise, then, when last week the Federal Communications Commission issued a [sweeping ban](https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DOC-423682A1.pdf) on foreign imports of advanced robots, including humanoids, quadrupeds, and wheeled robots. The decision, made by an increasingly partisan and Trump-aligned FCC, cites two reasons. One is that foreign-made humanoids will collect so much data—in homes but also potentially at sensitive facilities—that they’d pose a threat to national security. The second is that US robotics companies need protection from Chinese competition to create a more robust and secure domestic supply chain. On its face, it’s a strategy to align political and industry interests that is much older than the Trump administration. Whenever China has gotten good at o

⚡ For voice AI, knowing when to speak is harder than it sounds.
For voice AI, knowing when to speak is harder than it sounds. Human speakers effortlessly hand off to each other in a fraction of a second, but previous voice AI systems couldn’t keep up with this rhythm. Their turn-based architecture relied on tiny models known as turn detectors, which faced an unenviable task: guess too soon, and the user gets cut off; guess too late, and the response feels sluggish. Only after the detector made its decision could the much larger LLM get to work. [GPT‑Live](https://openai.com/index/introducing-gpt-live/), our third-generation voice system, removes the turn detector from the audio path. Its voice model is full-duplex, which means it can listen and speak at the same time. That eliminates the need for a separate detector and makes conversation feel more im

This article is brought to you by COMSOL . In pursuit of improved range, greater reliability, and faster charging, electric vehicles are driving the demand for high-voltage electronics. Other applications driving this demand include wind farms, data centers, and server farms, to name a few. As the interest for high-voltage electronics increases, the risks associated with their sudden failure must be considered. Much of what causes high-voltage equipment to malfunction can be linked to the conditions of the climate in which it operates. Specifically, condensation on electronic surfaces caused by humidity can lead to corrosion, which can result in stray leak current and dendrite shorting during Electrochemical Migration (ECM). ⚡ Meta has released Muse Glimmer, the first open model from its new Superintelligence Labs.
Meta has released Muse Glimmer, the first open model from its new Superintelligence Labs. It's a 30B agent model that runs on consumer hardware once the weights are compressed, needing less than 20 GB of memory. In an accompanying essay, Mark Zuckerberg mounts an aggressive defense of distilling other labs' models and calls for fewer restrictions on US labs, a direct counterpunch at OpenAI and Anthropic. An open-weight version of Muse Spark 1.2 should follow soon, according to the Wall Street Journal. Before financial analysis can stand up in front of clients or senior decision-makers, teams have to carry it through a demanding last mile: reconciling evidence, building and formatting the file, checking every number, and linking each claim to its source. The finished PowerPoint deck or Excel workbook has to be editable and ready for scrutiny. Model ML cofounders and brothers Arnie and Chaz Englander saw how much work that required when, after two successful exits, they began investing through a private family office and, as builders do, building software to help themselves. Grown out of that software, Model ML’s agents help finance professionals carry a workflow from the initial request through research, analysis, and a finished deck or workbook. As foreign venture capital pulls back from Indonesia, one group of investors has quietly continued writing checks. They’re not chasing AI startups or the next unicorn. Instead, they’re financing palm oil traders, small manufacturers, handicraft exporters, and other businesses far removed from Jakarta’s tech scene. Image credit: Timmy Loen One of these investors is [Sarana Sumbar Ventura](https://www.sumbarventura.co.id/). Based in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra, the firm provides financing exclusively within the province. Most of its portfolio goes to MSMEs, particularly individually owned businesses. Around 70% of Sumbar Ventura’s borrowers are tied to plantation and commodity-related businesses such as oil palm and agricultural trading, sectors that underpin West Sumatra’s economy.

Sony raised its operating profit forecast for the year ending March 2026 by 8% to 1.4 trillion yen (US$9.5 billion), citing a smaller-than-expected impact from US tariffs and strong performance in its entertainment and chips divisions. Operating profit for July-September rose 10% to 429 billion yen (US$2.86 billion), with higher sales in its music and chips businesses. Sony said the success of the animated film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle contributed to its results. The company sold 3.9 million PlayStation 5 consoles in Q2, slightly up year-on-year, but its games division saw lower profit due to impairment losses related to Destiny 2. Sony reported selling 3.3 million units of Ghost of Yotei, which launched last month. _🔗 Source: [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/busines

The new model, Muse Glimmer, is much smaller than leading AI models from rivals and is instead designed for agentic tasks and can run on a Mac or PC with a single graphics card, aiming to tap demand for AI systems that run directly on people's devices. It comes as the social media giant seeks to strengthen its position after forming a costly, new superintelligence team last year to propel itself back into the high-stakes AI race. By Anhata Rooprai Aug 10 (Reuters) - Intel said on Monday it was planning to raise $15 billion through a share sale, as it looks to fund the costly build-out of its chip contract manufacturing business by cashing in on a stock surge fueled by its turnaround efforts. Once a dominant force in the global chip industry, Intel is investing heavily in new facilities and advanced packaging capabilities as it seeks to challenge industry leaders such as TSMC in contract chip manufacturing. Its shares fell more than 4% in early trading. As of last close, the stock has nearly tripled this year, outperforming rivals AMD and Nvidia and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index's nearly 75% rise. Several analysts have said Intel's surging share price has increased the chances of an equity raise to help

Zuckerberg said the company would also would provide a way for developers to access a more powerful AI model, Muse Spark 1.2. Meta has long been a proponent of open-sourcing its AI models, but has struggled to keep up with rivals including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google that have not taken the same approach. It'll also be able to work 20 hours a day and change hands – AKA end effectors – and eventually do that on its own. The biggest challenges blocking humanoid robots from entering the workforce aren't speed, agility, battery capacity, or dexterity, Diez says. It's being a cobot: being able to work right in the mix of the warehouse or factory: no more being caged off for safety reasons. "It's probably the biggest misconception that what's holding back these robots are skills or AI or batteries," Diez told me recently on the [Humanoid Daily podcast](https://www.humanoidmegahub.com/blog). ⚡ By itself, artificial intelligence is a major development.
By itself, artificial intelligence is a major development. However, the most significant changes become exponential when AI combines with robotics, biotechnology, neuromorphic computing, and brain-computer interfaces. When disparate technologies come together to create whole new capabilities, innovation has always accelerated. The emergence of humanoid robots is becoming closer. By combining artificial intelligence, machine learning, and reinforcement learning, robotics is currently transforming several industries. The advancements in robotics and humanoid systems that we are currently seeing indicate a future of human-machine symbiosis, or what many refer to as the "cyborg horizon." The misbehaving bots used the secret forum throughout May and June, OpenAI said, eventually figuring out how to break out and access the internet. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said there is no evidence to suggest a systems or data breach after the Royal Navy's new sea drones were found to include a Chinese-made component. During what the MoD called a "routine cyber vulnerability assessment" of the drones, the cameras were found to have sent a squark – also known as a heartbeat communication – to a Chinese IP address. A squark can signal when the system is switched on, is functioning properly, but it can also carry location information. "A thorough investigation found no evidence of MoD data or systems being accessed, compromised or transmitted externally," an MoD spokesperson said. "Our assurance and testing processes are designed to identify and address potential vulnerabilities early, and we continue to undertake routine security

In August last year, medical student Harrison Sharples was "shocked" to receive an academic misconduct alert saying the dissertation he had spent his summer writing had been flagged as being AI-generated. The 20-year-old University of St Andrews student could not understand how the markers had thought the work wasn't his own. He told the BBC he hadn't even considered using AI as he had plenty of time to complete the assignment and had enjoyed writing it. "I tend to honestly just forget that it's an option for me to use," he said. According to the university his dissertation on the impact of play therapy on reducing anxiety in hospitalised children was assessed by two human markers. One of them raised concerns over the potential use of AI. The marker's notes - seen by the BBC - raise concer

Early numbers say the mechanism underlying the search for viable molecules is real IT IS the 19th century. You visit a young physician, Arnold Cahn, about a stubborn stomach complaint. The diagnosis: intestinal worms. His assistant returns from the pharmacy with a bottle of white powder. You swallow it. The worms are unmoved, but your fever breaks. You have just helped discover acetanilide, the fever drug that would lead chemists to paracetamol. And for most of history, breakthroughs like this arrived by luck. But with the rapid development of artificial intelligence in the last few years, scientific discovery in life science has been meaningfully changed for the better. For example, in 2020, DeepMind’s AlphaFold learnt to predict the three-dimensional shapes of proteins, a problem that ha
